The way that works best for me is flash cards. It is easier for me to study using flashcard because it sticks with me easier than just writing down the word and definition.
The best way for me to study for a vocab quiz is just to read the word, write what I think is the definition, then look up the real definition. Then you just keep repeating that until you have all of the definitions down pat.

Prior to taking a vocab quiz, I usually use flash cards. After that, I usually am quizzed by someone else. This helps me prepare for a vocab quiz.
